What is Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP)?

EAP is therapy provided by a licensed therapist with the assistance of horses. EAP addresses many mental health concerns including, but not limited to, depression, anxiety, relationship issues, domestic violence, trauma-related symptoms, PTSD, substance abuse and attachment issues. People who do not feel comfortable in a traditional office setting may find EAP especially beneficial.

Do you have to have horse experience to participate?

No. Prior horse experience is not required to participate. EAP can be equally beneficial for those who have and have not been around horses.

I’m not sure if I want to try therapy with horses, can I try traditional talk therapy first?

Absolutely! At Changing Reins, we believe that everyone is unique and may require different approaches in therapy. There is no obligation to participate with horses but this option can always be added in the future if you feel comfortable.

Do you accept insurance?

Changing Reins Psychotherapy currently participates with Aetna and Optum. A superbill can be provided for an out of network benefit. All sessions not covered by insurance are at a fixed rate.

How long will I need to be in therapy for?

There is no minimum or maximum requirement on the number of sessions you may have. At Changing Reins, we believe that everyone has different needs and therapy is tailored to fit those needs. You will work with your therapist to determine the best time to terminate treatment.

What is trauma?

Trauma is a response that results from a distressing event, series of events, or set of circumstances with lasting adverse effects on the individual’s functional state and mental, physical, social, emotional, or spiritual well-being. At Changing Reins, we specialize in treating these adverse effects most often caused from experiencing trauma.

Do I have to have experienced trauma to receive therapy?

Not at all! Changing Reins works with all individuals looking to create a healthier well-being.

What age range do you serve?

Changing Reins primarily serves adolescents and adults. Children younger that 12 years old will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis to determine appropriateness for therapy. There is no upper age limit.

Do I need a referral to get into treatment?

No. Changing Reins accepts referrals from both the individual and outside providers. Feel free to contact us directly!
